Space invasion of privacy

As the National Security Agency's secretive international spy network Echelon comes under scrutiny in Congress next month, Americans may be facing another threat to their privacy in the form of newly developed commercial satellites that collect live video images from space -- and sell those images to whoever pays the price.

Earlier this year, the National Security Agency was accused by members of the European parliament of abusing its Echelon interception system -- a worldwide spy network of defense satellites and super-computers -- by monitoring commercial and civilian traffic. According to defense analysts, Echelon allows the NSA to monitor millions of telephone, fax, e-mail, and data transmissions. These intercepts are then reportedly archived and searched for particular items of interest.

Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga., is scheduled to hold hearings next year on whether Echelon was used illegally to monitor Americans. The system allegedly was intended to monitor the former Soviet Union for military purposes...

Iin stunned silence and disbelief I watched the News last night on KTLA5, a Los Angeles based network covering a news item that should send chills down any parents' spine.

In a chirpy, happy, happy - joy, joy voice anchor Hal Fishman announced that schools are now getting access to a "new" computer program called "Mosaic2000" a threat-analysis application that "helps" teachers point out potentially dangerous students by the "tell-tale"signs of the things they say.

Woop-ti-do! The Thought police has arrived.

It is now possible to "tag" such students with small entries in a database which over a period of time creates a "profile" of the student. The tags are such terms as: "Threatening, dangerous, disturbing" and more of that beautiful newspeak we have had to face from our illicit Powers That Be.

Before long folks, we can send your kid away as a dangerous psychopath not to be seen for several years whilst he undergoes some sinister behavior modification. And all that for planning to heist the birthday cake of his nextdoor buddy which was misunderstood by our misguided guardians of the Brave New World...This is a future that must not be!!
