Letter to the President

.../Kill the Farner

"DEAR Mr President: Since you seem to be having some difficulty relating to the reality of living in the real South Africa (and not the one you and your ministers enjoy), I thought perhaps we could borrow from one of Aesop’s fables to explain the situation. There was this goose that used to lay golden eggs. Then one day some poachers decided to kill the goose in order to steal the golden eggs. Now the goose was dead and there were no more golden eggs.

"Fortunately there were some other geese who could lay golden eggs: but having watched the death of their friend, and having seen that the gamekeeper was more interested in protecting the poachers than he was in looking after the geese, they decided to leave the game park in which they grew up, and settle in one where the game keepers took their job more seriously.

"Now all the geese had gone and there were no more golden eggs. The poachers then turned on the gamekeeper in their anger, since they now had no way of feeding themselves. Perhaps you should stop thinking of it as the ‘chicken run,’ and start thinking of it more as the flight of the geese who could lay golden eggs." - Letter signed Terry Burne and published in The Natal Witness,  Oct 14, 1998.
